Basanta Panchami is an Indian festival which is celebrated in January-February, in anticipation of Spring, when nature arouses from her winter slumber and bursts forth in blossoms and flowing rivers. In the eastern Indian states – Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa this festival is dedicated to the Goddess Saraswati who is worshipped as the Goddess of knowledge, who inspires all learning, including the study of languages, music, and the arts. Goddess Saraswati also symbolizes creative energy and power in all its forms, including longing and love. People dress in yellow saris, clothes and accessories, share snacks and sweets, to reflect the abundance of flowers ripening in the spring warmth. Many families choose this day to make an auspicious start, by introducing their young children to the giver of knowledge Ma Saraswati, and encouraging them to write their first words with their fingers, while some study or create music together.
